Shortest day 21st December 2020 winter solstice - last 1st Class Royal Mail post day approaching fast

Monday 21st December 2020 at 13:30 hours in the Northern hemisphere will be the shortest day.  In other words, the date with the fewest hours of daylight, and longest hours of night.  (The Southern Hemisphere experiences the reverse effect, with this day being the longest and hence summertime).

The winter solstice is caused by the wobble of earth in its orbit around the sun, when the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun.

Did you know that each solar-day near this period is about 24 hours and 30 seconds long, which also adds to the shift in sunrise and sunset times each day.  This means the mornings continue darkening until early in the new year.

Even after the solstice, with the days slowly getting longer, the sun in winter is so low that more energy escapes from earth than is absorbed from the sun, hence the earth of the northern hemisphere continues to cool.  It’s not until roughly a month after the solstice that average temperatures reach their lowest point.

Winter Solstice has been celebrated in cultures all around the world for thousands of years.  Indeed at Stonehenge is believed to have been an important religious site for early Britons some 4,000 years ago.  The name Solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium (meaning sun to stand still).

Way back in history, this day was known as Yule, and was the commencement of an eleven day celebration of light and the rebirth of the Sun ☀️

‘Yule’ is still celebrated in Germany and Scandinavia.  This is where we get many of our Christmas customs from, including Christmas trees and putting wreaths on the front door.
